That is why I make clothes, I want to materialize the stories I hear

Hi! I’m

Biel Cervera GArrido

I’m an extremely creative person with a deep passion for clothing and design that was inspired by the legacy of my mother’s aunt, la tía Josefa, a seamstress who went unnoticed by history. The stories my mother and grandmother told me about the dresses she made them, made me want to pursue a career where I could create clothes that evoke the same joy in others as hers did, and my hope is that I’ll be talked about in the same way as she still is.

My passion for structured, minimalist garments, particularly those that combine simplicity on the outside with complex, meticulous construction inside comes from my love for Balenciaga and his mastery of volume and shape. My fixation for one-seam or single-piece garments reflects my appreciation for both his precision and the artistry of his designs.

I’m always learning, even when I’m not trying to. I firmly believe that the most valuable things you can learn are usually the the little things that are passed on from one person to another, like the experience that someone who has dedicated their entire life to a craft can share. Small secrets, such as a special way to finish a hem or to turn a drawing upside down to see where it can be improved. For that reason I’m always eager to share moments and try and learn from every person I meet. I suppose that is why I thrive on challenges and am particularly drawn to intricate and complex garments or patterns, seeing them as opportunities to grow.

Fashion is not just about making clothes, specially now, that so many crafts have been lost or replaced by cheaper, easier and intelligent methods. Fashion is and I hope will continue to be, a storytelling device. It shows the world who you are or who you want to be, beyond serving a purpose, it has changed many stories and forged many more. Just like in “The emperor’s new clothes”, it can be the center of a story or the lack thereof, like an extra in a movie. That is why I make clothes, I want to materialize the stories I hear, and I hope they create new ones with the people who wear them. There are many precious moments that I’d love to be able to take part in through my clothes. Just like tía Josefa’s stories live through me.
